One of my favorite science fiction tropes is that of doppelgängers. I love when there's a clone or an alternate dimension version of a character, or a mysterious twin. I love seeing them side by side and watching them fight (they always do). There's something so compelling about seeing two versions of one person on screen. It brings questions of identity and dualism into play, two great themes. It makes us think about what we would do if we were presented with a duplicate of ourselves. 

Would we send them out into the world to do all the unpleasant tasks we don't feel like dealing with? Would they end up resenting us for that? Would they try and harm us so that they were the only true version of us? Can we feel the things that they feel? What if they assume your life, meet your friends, and ruin everything? These are all wonderful, meaty questions.

  • Science fiction helps us explore these concepts without the limits of reality. Anything can happen in science fiction. There could be infinite versions of ourselves, all with different outlooks on the world. But if I know one thing, I know they'd all still enjoy memes. That's true across all dimensions.
